Alina Egelhofer: The 3D configurator makes our complex products tangible for our customers.

INTERVIEW: ACD Elektronik, a specialist in industrial and mobile workstation systems, relies on Roomle’s Rubens 3D Configurator to make complex product variants intuitive and visually tangible. In this interview with Alina Egelhofer, Head of Marketing & Product Management, you’ll learn how the configurator impressed at the LogiMAT trade fair, which internal processes it streamlines, and what digital initiatives ACD Elektronik is pursuing next.

Interview:

Ms. Egelhofer, what prompted ACD Elektronik to look for a 3D configurator solution?

We already had an online configurator in place on our website. As the portfolio expanded, the previous system reached its limits with the growing variety of options. We therefore wanted to take the next step: enabling customers to configure our mobile workstation solutions in a lifelike, individualized way — visually, intuitively, and online.

Which features of the configurator were particularly important to you during the implementation?

The most important thing for us was an intuitive user experience — easy configuration of the individual mobile workstation and lifelike 3D visualization. The PDF export of the material parts list is also especially helpful for easy downstream processing. And the integration of the AR feature was the icing on the cake, making the product even more tangible for our customers.

How was the configurator used at the LogiMAT 2025 trade fair in Stuttgart, and what kind of feedback did you receive?

We were able to showcase the configurator live for the first time at LogiMAT 2025 in Stuttgart. Our booth team was delighted: visitors could experience the Mobile Workstation — and, above all, the wide range of add-ons and accessories — directly in 3D, far beyond what could be physically displayed at the booth, try out variants, and ask questions. The interface was intuitive and very well received.

How has the introduction of the configurator impacted your internal processes?

The PDF parts list is a real asset for our internal sales team, as it greatly simplifies the quotation and order processing. Our field sales team also actively uses the configurator during customer visits. This allows us to present the product in a realistic way without needing to bring along a complete mobile workstation physically. It makes consultations significantly more efficient.

How would you describe the collaboration with Roomle? Were there any particular challenges?

Collaboration with Roomle was collaborative and dependable — with prompt support and clear, proactive communication. The wide variety of configuration options was implemented optimally thanks to the team’s structured approach. Especially valuable is the post–go-live support: with tailored training, practical best practices, and quick response times, Roomle supports us with maintenance and continuous optimization.

What are your next steps? Are there plans to configure additional products or applications?

We are currently working on further expanding and optimizing the configurator for the MAX Black Edition. Next, we plan to implement our M2Smart® HMI family — designed for wireless, secure machine operation — as an online configurator on the website. In the long term, we are evaluating how to integrate additional product lines such as mobile handheld computers, wearable scanners, and vehicle mount terminals.

What advice would you give to other companies considering the implementation of a configurator?

Just have the courage to take the step. It’s important to start with a clear goal and keep the user in focus. With Roomle, we found a partner who supported us optimally — both technically and personally. And we’re very satisfied with the result.

“The configurator not only streamlines our internal processes — it also makes our products visually tangible and modern to experience.”

Learn more about the ACD Elektronik use case

ACD Elektronik aimed to make its complex mobile workstation solutions digitally tangible while simultaneously streamlining the sales process.
By integrating the Rubens 3D Configurator on their website, ACD Elektronik was able to create an intuitive and visually engaging configuration experience — for both customers and the internal and field sales teams.

The result: a more modern product presentation, simplified quoting processes, and significant added value for sales consultations.

Developer Interview

Technical insight into the development of the ACD 3D configurator with Roomle developer Anni

Anni, thank you for taking the time for this interview. You were involved in the technical implementation of the 3D configurator for ACD Elektronik. What were the biggest challenges in this highly modular project?

Anni: The biggest challenge was to depict ACD’s product variety and extensive range of accessories realistically and with strong performance in 3D. ACD’s workstation systems are very detailed and high quality — accordingly, we invested a great deal of care in optimizing the models, especially the textures. Our goal was for the presentation to be not only visually convincing but also to run smoothly on all end devices. Close coordination with ACD was crucial in enabling us to develop models that meet the high standards and are perfectly suited for real-time applications.

How did you handle the variant logic, and how did you ensure a good user experience despite the complexity?

Anni: From the outset, ACD provided us with a very well-structured Excel table that mapped the complete logic — i.e., which parts and options can be combined. This clarity was a great help and prevented many misunderstandings. In parallel, UX/UI designs — primarily via a Miro board from Tanja — gave us clear visual guidelines, which we translated, in close coordination with ACD, into an intuitive and uncluttered user experience.

What technical requirements did ACD have in terms of performance and visualization?

Anni: The most important requirement was that the 3D models be optimally prepared. CAD data often contains details that are not needed for real-time rendering, such as invisible internal objects or tiny components. Together with ACD, we selectively simplified the models — without losing the products’ characteristic properties or high-quality appearance. Metallic surfaces, which are common in ACD products, could be rendered realistically using our own materials. When needed, we also collaborated with our external partner WM Motor to turn CAD or 2D drawings into perfectly optimized models.

What learnings or best practices did you take from this project?

Anni: One important insight was that we primarily worked with ACD’s marketing team. That presented new communication requirements: instead of deep technical workshops, it was about explaining technical interrelationships clearly and developing pragmatic solutions together. This proved very efficient and was also a valuable learning for our own support team. As a result, we further developed the Roomle Academy and tailored our training formats even more closely to the needs of marketing and e-commerce teams.

Was there a moment in the project when everything suddenly “clicked”?

Anni: Yes, absolutely. A special moment was when we received the Excel spreadsheet with the complete product logic right at the start. It was so clearly and comprehensively prepared that we could start scripting right away with no room for interpretation. In other projects, this kind of information often emerges step by step; here we had a solid foundation from the outset, which helped enormously. It was so valuable that we now want to derive a standardized template for future projects.

Looking back, what are you most proud of?

Anni: I’m proud of how we represented ACD Elektronik’s product variety in the configurator. Despite the many parameters and options, it runs smoothly, the models look realistic, and the interface remains intuitive. That shows how much attention to detail and strong collaboration went into this project.

In summary, the collaboration with ACD Elektronik was extremely instructive and successful for both sides. We look forward to continuing our work together and implementing further innovative configuration projects.

Thank you for the great insights, Anni!
